"Police in Cyprus claimed Saturday to have cracked a euro forgery ring after four people were arrested for allegedly trying to exchange counterfeit EUR 84,000 for Cypriot pounds, AFP News Agency informs.
The four -- three men and one woman -- were remanded in custody for eight days by Nicosia district court, charged with conspiracy, possession and circulation of forged bank notes, and receiving money under false pretenses, a police official said.
The case came to light on Friday when a Turkish Cypriot travel agent in Nicosia arranged to convert 84,000 euros worth of banknotes in 200-euro denominations for Cypriot cash totalling GBP 48,500 (USD 108,700).
Suspecting the yellow-coloured banknotes to be counterfeit, the travel agent tipped off police who Saturday tracked down the suspects' car in the parking lot of a Nicosia hotel, with a large quantity of Cypriot cash found inside.
Cypriot television quoted a police investigator as telling the court that the forged notes were apparently the work of a foreign-based ring, and that another EUR 100,000 worth of bogus banknotes were being sought."
